Think You Can And You Will

“If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.“ – Mahatma Gandhi

Could it be that Gandhi read The Little Engine that could ? it was the first self help book I ever read. I was 4 years old and it formed how I look at life. It had a strong female who thought she could and she did. It’s been around for 84 years and still is a top selling picture book. If you have not read it, I’ve posted the video of the book below. There’s also a catchy tune at the end. It can put a skip in your day

Rest and Digest

Rest – stop working in order to recover strength, also place for support

Digest – absorb into the mind

We tend to face challenges in our life by pushing and bulldozing, but some times the best solution is to sit down, rest and digest.

We have become accustomed to instant everything, from soup to success.  If we don’t see results instantly we feel  a failure. You don’t plant flower seeds on Tuesday and expect flowers on Wednesday.  A bad haircut can seem to last forever, but without noticing, one day its grown out.

When exhausted from all the pushing and getting nowhere, sometimes we need to stop, breathe, and do a little dance.

Trust

Life is working in your favour.

“Our heads are round so our thoughts can change direction”
Francis Picabia

As my favourite person Sark says “Restore and explore, fill yourself with laughter, take a different route. Re- energize yourself, Recover and discover.

Here’s a fun video to help re-energize yourself and fly around the room with.

Educating the Creativity Out of Us

Our creativity is stalled when we are afraid of being wrong. In school we were taught to think in the box. Getting a wrong answer was not rewarded.

In this funny and enlightening ted talk Sir Ken Robinson explains how the education system works against cultivating creativity.

Art is Important

I’ve always found looking at art a great solace. I gravitate to museums when I need a spark in my life. I love getting lost in a painting and finding my way out,a bit transformed. The following quote from Alain de Botton is from his new book Art as Therapy.

We are very vulnerable, fragile creatures in desperate need of support and we generally don’t get it. … Art [can be] a source of help with our problems – our innermost problems – the problems of the soul. . . . Art can be a form of self-help and there is nothing demeaning about the concept of self-help – only the way in which some of self-help has been done so far, but there is nothing wrong with it as a concept. . . .

After watching the following video it confirms my belief in how important Artists are.

His talk is 45 minutes, so grab a cup of tea and listen to a fascinating new viewpoint on the importance of art.

Getting Back on the Playground

Children don’t give up.   When they’re on the playground and fall down and scrape their knee, they don’t say ‘ I’m never going back to the playground, I got hurt there’.  No they get up, maybe have a cry, then start playing all over again.

Why as adults do we give up having fun on the playground because we scraped our knee?

If I think about it, it’s  rather silly, to miss out  on what was fun the majority of the time for the once or twice it wasn’t.   I will, of course try to remember how I scraped my knee and avoid doing it again, but I’m not going to tip toe through the fun in case it happens again.  I’m just going to bring more Band-Aids.

One of my favourite songs about this game of life.

Getting Rid of Unhappiness

“Sometimes you’ve got to let everything go – purge yourself. If you are unhappy with anything . . . whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it. Because you’ll find that when you’re free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.”

 – Tina Turner

New Year is a good time to really follow this advice.

Here’s a get up and shake off unhappiness video.  This is Tina at 69 years young. Awesome and inspiring.  The words of the song can also apply to oneself  be good to yourself and stop lying to yourself.
