Unwrap Nature’s Gift

It’s a hectic time of year where we all get wrapped up in the wrong things. We can forget to leave space for the magic.

Watching this video may help put things in perspective.

Think You Can And You Will

“If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.“ – Mahatma Gandhi

Could it be that Gandhi read The Little Engine that could ? it was the first self help book I ever read. I was 4 years old and it formed how I look at life. It had a strong female who thought she could and she did. It’s been around for 84 years and still is a top selling picture book. If you have not read it, I’ve posted the video of the book below. There’s also a catchy tune at the end. It can put a skip in your day

Educating the Creativity Out of Us

Our creativity is stalled when we are afraid of being wrong. In school we were taught to think in the box. Getting a wrong answer was not rewarded.

In this funny and enlightening ted talk Sir Ken Robinson explains how the education system works against cultivating creativity.

Self confidence and Smelly Socrates

I was unaware of exactly how much a rebel Socrates was. He walked around barefoot and smelly challenging peoples beliefs. Now that’s self confidence. How often do we ask the hard questions especially if we have a well worn odour about us and no shoes.

Don’t let yourself be weighed down by what other people think, because in a few years, in a few decades, or in a few centuries, that way of thinking will have changed. Live now what others will only live in the future.” – Paulo Coelho

Following like a sheep is not the way to creative freedom. Self confidence is needed to break out of that box. Socrates challenged lazy assumptions. This entertaining video by Alain de Botton explores how we all can lead a true life.

Getting Out There

When you say I’m nowhere, let in some space and
you are suddenly now here.

When you step away and give yourself some air, you shift a bit
And that’s what makes the difference.

Jumpstart Yourself

This is The Year of the Yang Wood Horse, which means we should all be galloping along, so don’t keep your self in the stable.

When stuck or lethargic about a project or a life situation
Ask these questions

If I don’t do this – What will happen?
if I can’t do this – Why?
if I mustn’t do this – Why?
if I won’t do this – Why?

Write the answers down, see them on paper, keep asking until you see the real reasons.
It may surprize you as to what’s holding you back.

Forget about your life situation and pay attention to your life. Your life
situation exists in time. Your life is now. Your life situation is mind-stuff.
Your life is real.’
Eckhart Tolle

Art is Important

I’ve always found looking at art a great solace. I gravitate to museums when I need a spark in my life. I love getting lost in a painting and finding my way out,a bit transformed. The following quote from Alain de Botton is from his new book Art as Therapy.

We are very vulnerable, fragile creatures in desperate need of support and we generally don’t get it. … Art [can be] a source of help with our problems – our innermost problems – the problems of the soul. . . . Art can be a form of self-help and there is nothing demeaning about the concept of self-help – only the way in which some of self-help has been done so far, but there is nothing wrong with it as a concept. . . .

After watching the following video it confirms my belief in how important Artists are.

His talk is 45 minutes, so grab a cup of tea and listen to a fascinating new viewpoint on the importance of art.
